Supporting Your Child
We understand that starting school in a new country can be an exciting but unfamiliar experience. At Te Puna Wānanga o Te Wairepo – Victory Primary School, we want every international student to feel safe, welcomed and included from the beginning.
We will work closely with students and their parents or legal guardians to help each child settle into school and make the most of their experience with us.
Settling In
Every international student will receive an orientation when they begin at our school. We will introduce them to their teacher and classmates and help them become familiar with the school, daily routines, facilities and expectations.
Teachers will support students to build friendships, participate in classroom life and become confident in their new environment.
Learning & Language Support
International students will learn alongside other students in their regular classroom and participate in the same learning programme and opportunities.
We recognise that students may arrive with different levels of English and different educational experiences. Teachers will get to know each student's strengths and learning needs and provide appropriate support to help them participate successfully in learning.
Additional English language support may be provided where appropriate and where possible.
Where appropriate, we can also help families understand the New Zealand education system and their child's pathway into intermediate or secondary education following their time at our school.
Wellbeing & Communication
The wellbeing of our international students is important to us. Teachers will monitor how students are settling in, their participation in learning and their overall wellbeing throughout their enrolment.
We will maintain regular communication with parents or legal guardians and encourage families to contact us at any time if they have questions or concerns.
Families are encouraged to share information about their child's culture, language, interests, health, learning needs or other circumstances that may help us provide appropriate support.
