Opportunities

Our aim is to provide our tamariki with a holistic, well-rounded education by providing additional learning opportunities beyond the day-to-day classroom.

We do this with equity at the forefront and use Te Whare Tapa Whā as a model to provide a balanced range of opportunities that benefit all aspects of a child's well-being. We want our children to be engaged, motivated, and learning all the time with the ultimate goal of making a difference for every child and setting them up for success. Some of the opportunities at Victory Primary School are listed below.

  • Sports

We have a specialist sports coordinator to provide opportunities for children to represent our school or participate in Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Netball, Rippa Rugby, Touch Rugby, Rugby, Hockey, Cricket, Softball, Tee Ball, Table Tennis, Tennis, and the Weetbix Kiwi Kids TRYathalon.

  • Cultural Diversity Celebrations

Our biggest strength is our diversity and every year we have 'Cultural Diversity Week' to celebrate all of the beautiful cultures, languages, and traditions in our school. The week is filled with performances, food, cultural clothing, artefacts, and learning about all of the different cultures that make VPS such a unique place!

  • Kapa Haka

We have three competitive Kapa Haka groups, Te Rōpū Whakamanamana, Te Rōpū Whakatipuranga, and Te Rōpū o Wikitoria within Ngā Mana Kākano o Te Wairepo, and we also have a specialist Kapa Haka teacher in all of our English Medium classrooms once a week. Our Kapa Haka Tutors are incredibly skilled and there are opportunities for all children to learn and grow in this area.

  • Kia Toa Student Leadership

Our Kia Toa Student Leadership Team consists of Year 6 students that apply and interview for a role as a Kia Toa Leader. The programme is designed to provide opportunities for Year 6 children to be tuakana/role models and develop leadership skills, autonomy, and confidence.

  • Swimming Programme

We invest each year in a comprehensive swimming programme for all students at our school. The skills they are taught are life-changing and allow children to feel safe and confident in the water. In Term One we use our own school pool and in Term Four we book lessons in a larger pool.

  • Gardening Club

Our community garden is award winning and our VPS Gardening Club runs once a week at lunch time to give children a chance to be involved in taking care of our school garden and learning about everything from planting to pruning. Check out our gardening club website here.

The VPS Kaitiaki o Te Wairepo are guardians of our stream (Te Wairepo) that runs through our school. They meet once a week to work together, practice kaitiakitanga, and look after our school environment. Check out their mahi on their website.

  • Victory Homework Academy (VHA)

We have a fully funded homework academy in place for any students who are from a refugee, migrant background. This programme is run by highly-skilled staff and gives our children a chance to reinforce the learning they've been doing in class.

  • Samoan and Cook Island Language Classes

We offer additional language classes in Samoan and Cook Island Māori. These classes are taught by fluent speakers and happen once a week for children with Samoan or Cook Island heritage.

  • Wellbeing Activities

We have a range of well-being activities that happen at break times to give children plenty of options of things to do. These options vary throughout the year but include: Skateboard Ramps, Wheels Wednesdays, Chalk Art, Sports and Games, Colouring Competitions, and more!
