The conditions were perfect for playing soccer. The Victory School Soccer Team travelled to Hira School to play their first away game. The players enjoyed the journey out to Hira School as the sea, mountains and inlet looked beautiful in the bright winter sun. The herd of cows also made a big impression. The nerves and excitement, turned into smiles as we caught a sight of a huge sign welcoming us to their school. The little country school provided a warm and friendly welcome.
Space Talk
Victory Primary School in Nelson joined the space age with a lesson one youngster described as something that would happen only once in a lifetime.
Pupils sang a karakia for American astronauts Cathy Coleman and Alvin Drew from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa). Then they asked questions as they flew 350 kilometres above the Earth at 27,000kmh on the International Space Station (ISS). Nelson Mail More TV3 News
Locusts make finals
Ruma Tekau ma Wha have been breeding locusts to feed the tuatara at Nelson's Natureland Zoo. As part of the project the class created an entry for the TVNZ 6 NetGuide webchallenge. Their entry was placed second in the class catergory of the competition.
'We look after our locusts and feed them every day. We feed them apple, bran, cabbage, grass and water.
We take turns taking them home in the weekend. We have to remember to change the water and food, turn the light off so they don't get too hot, and put them in a little box to bring them back to school. We aren't scared of handling locusts because we do it a lot.'
